BACKGROUND CHECK INFORMATION One thing we can all agree on is the desire to keep our kids safe. Toward that end, the BSA developed its nationally-acclaimed Youth Protection Program. In 2003 we also began criminal background checks on all new adult applicants. Now, in our latest efforts to keep our youth safe and meet societal and legal expectations, we are going back and completing criminal background checks on those continuously registered since before April of 2003 . While to some this may represent an inconvenience, for our Scouts and their parents, it represents further assurance that our Scouts are in good hands. Volunteers who have not had a background check should have received a letter from Chief Scout Executive Bob Mazzuca in June. The letter explained the need for consent to conduct a criminal background check (“CBC”) and directed volunteers to a web site. Volunteers who receive the Chief’s letter but do not complete the web site process by August 1, 2008, can not renew their registrations at recharter time without completing a new BSA application.
